The Memphis design movement was born in Italy in the early 1980s, started by a group of edgy, young product and furniture designers. Their style was intended to shock the design scene by their utter dissention from the norm. This rule-breaking was seen as both a bit insane as well as totally liberating and was praised as the movement that brought some ‘soul’ back into high quality design. The kitsch geometric patterns, material experimentation and quirky bold block colouring remains relevant in fashion and design today.
